Dr. Arenia C. Mallory Community Health Center is only one of 19 nonprofit organizations from across the country awarded a grant from the AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation's Connections for Cardiovascular Health program in recognition of its efforts to improve cardiovascular health in local communities.  The $228, 445 grant will fund the Martha W. Davis Healthy Families Movement Porgram.

This is the third grant Dr. Arenia C. Mallory Community Health Center, Inc. has received from the foundation, which provides annual awards of $150,000 and up to U.S. -based non profit organizations engaged in improving cardiovascular health in their communities.

The grant from the AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation will help Dr. Arenia C. Mallory Community Health Center to fund the Martha W. Davis Healthy Families Movement Program.  This program aims to reduce the risk of heart disease among low-income, African American women of childbearing age in Mallory Community Health Center's community by implementing a comprehensive cardiovascular wellness program that combines medical, nutritional, and fitness counseling with a targeted stress management intervention while also providing an array of enjoyable and engaging community-based opportunities for women to exercise, eat healthy, cultivate social support, and lose weight.

"Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and organizations like Dr. Arenia C. Mallory Community Health Center are creating innovative programs to help prevent and decrease the associated risks with this devastating disease," said James W. Blasetto, M.D., MPH, FACC, chairman of the AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation.  "We are grateful to Dr. Arenia C. Mallory Community Health Center for its committment to improving heart health in the community."

This year, the Foundation has awarded nearly $3.7 million in Connections for Cardiovascular Health grants to 19 organizations.  Since its inception in 2010, the Foundation has awarded over $14 million in grants to programs that encourage healthy behaviors in settings where people live, work, learn, and play.  Organizations must demonstrate the effectiveness of their programs and are eligible to receive up to three years of awards.
